Fall is one of the best times of year to enjoy land in and around Chattanooga. Cooler temperatures, changing leaves, and shorter days create great opportunities for hunting, hiking, camping, trail riding, wildlife watching, and simply spending more time outdoors. It’s also a good time to prepare your property for the months ahead.
Whether you own a few acres or a large recreational tract, here are some ways to make the most of your land this fall.
Walk Your Property
Before the leaves completely cover the ground, take some time to walk your property and look things over. Fall is a great opportunity to check fences, gates, roads, trails, bridges, drainage areas, and other features around your land.
Look for fallen trees, erosion, standing water, damaged fencing, or areas that may need attention before winter weather arrives. Walking your property regularly can also help you become more familiar with its terrain and natural features.
Maintain Roads and Trails
Fall is an ideal time to work on the roads and trails throughout your property. Clear fallen limbs and other debris, address areas that have become difficult to travel, and make sure access points are easy to use.
For recreational properties, well-maintained trails can make a big difference when it comes to hiking, hunting, horseback riding, ATV or UTV riding, and simply exploring your acreage.
Prepare for Hunting Season
For landowners who hunt, fall brings one of the most anticipated times of the year. Before heading into the woods, check stands, blinds, trails, feeders, and other hunting improvements. Make sure everything is secure and accessible.
Fall is also a good time to observe wildlife activity and identify areas where deer, turkey, and other wildlife are regularly traveling. Understanding how wildlife uses your property can help you make better decisions about habitat management and future improvements.
Always check current Tennessee hunting regulations, seasons, and property-specific requirements before hunting.
Enjoy the Fall Scenery
You don't always need a specific project or activity to enjoy your land. Fall is a great time to simply get outside and take in the changing landscape.
The Chattanooga area is surrounded by mountains, ridges, valleys, forests, and waterways that make autumn especially scenic. Local destinations such as Prentice Cooper State Forest and the Cumberland Trail offer opportunities to experience the area's fall colors, hiking, camping, and outdoor recreation.
If you own acreage with mountain or valley views, fall can also be one of the best times to enjoy those views as the foliage changes.
Spend Time on the Water
If your property includes a pond, creek, river access, or is located near one of the area's larger waterways, fall provides plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy the water.
The Chattanooga region offers access to the Tennessee River, Sequatchie River, Watts Bar Lake, and other waterways where residents can enjoy fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and boating.
Get Your Property Ready for Winter
Fall is also a good time to prepare your land and improvements for colder weather. Clean gutters and drainage areas, inspect outbuildings, check water lines and exterior structures, and take care of maintenance projects before winter arrives.
If you have livestock, make sure shelters, fencing, water sources, and feeding areas are ready for colder temperatures. Fall is also a good time to evaluate pastures and address areas that may need attention before winter.
Plan a Fall Camping Trip
If your property allows camping, take advantage of the cooler weather. Set up a campsite, enjoy a fire, cook a meal outdoors, or spend a night under the stars.
For larger recreational tracts, fall can be a great time for a weekend of hiking, horseback riding, ATV riding, hunting, or exploring areas of the property that may be harder to access during the heat of summer.
Take Advantage of Chattanooga's Outdoor Season
Fall isn't just a great season to enjoy your own property. Chattanooga and the surrounding region offer countless opportunities to experience the outdoors. The area is known for its hiking, paddling, mountain biking, horseback riding, camping, and scenic overlooks, with places such as Prentice Cooper and the Cumberland Trail offering particularly strong opportunities to enjoy the season.
For landowners, that's part of what makes the Chattanooga area so appealing. Whether your property is used for hunting, recreation, farming, livestock, or simply having a place to get away, fall offers plenty of reasons to spend more time outside.
